Hinoki cypress - Solitary tree style
« on: October 11, 2010, 12:14 PM »
My main reason for posting this is because I'm really pleased with its development.  This was one of three nursery Hinokis I bought  hoping to make a forest. When I failed finding suitable companion trees, I styled them all similarly, with variations dictated by each specimen. One was done as a club demo and auctioned off, another needs thinning and wiring (a task for later this Fall). This is the third.

I planted it on the slab because it allows the feeling of great space and helps hide the less-than-attractive nebari that I have been unable to correct. Its also lighter than most pots would be.

These are before and after this week's work and a progression from first styling. This Spring I'll reorient the tree on the slab and contour the soil level to be more natural.

Hope you like this.

Mike,
That is really nice work! I think that formal upright may be one of the most difficult to do well, yours is very good.
As you mention the position on the slab and soil surface need to be adjusted but that's the easy part.
With age, this tree will become even better too!

Impressive progression from  trivial material. Really evocative of a calm big tree in the moutains !

This simply elegant tree is a delight to see and those who came to the US National were treated to a meet and greet.
Check page 63 of the 2012 US National Bonsai Exhibition Album for a high quality photo. Mike is a great guy with a good eye and his trees show it.

Simply wonderful Mike.  I'm glad you shared this with us, I am just wondering how tall this tree is?  It's very nice on the slab, I don't have any of these, but I would have thought that they would need too much water to do a slab planting.
