Growing Ezo Spruce From Seed
« on: October 03, 2014, 10:14 AM »
I decided to purchase Ezo Spruce seeds on ebay from seller jclambd2929. I also purchased cuttings -not ezo spruce- from Brent, but that's a discussion for another topic. Many bloggers inspired me to do this. I thought hey, why not? I'm still young -only 21- therefore, why shouldn't I try this fun project that will be educational and rewarding in the long run. I'll receive the seeds next week so I wanted to take this opportunity to ask you what is the best preparing process for seeds before I plant them.

Thanks

Nick

Quick google search: http://forestry.alaska.gov/pdfs/spruceseed.pdf

Take that with a grain of salt as it's writing from an Alaskan climate perspective (probably wouldn't have to wait until April to cold stratify in your area) but gives you an outline.

My experience with growing from seed has been red pines, but I also have a totally different climate and have to start everything indoors! Just make sure you look into germination requirements for the spruce. Red pines for example need cold stratification and soaking and whatnot before you plant them (mine were done indoors and brought outside eventually to harden off). Each tree is different so just make sure you do research (this is not bonsai specific information, so should be easy to locate).

My process for red pines is documented here: http://bonsaicalgary.wordpress.com/red-pine-from-seed/

I started mine too early in the winter, but I have 7 that survived and grew well. I should take an updated photo of them!

Thank you jlushious for sharing that article, I ran into it too. I'll definitely look into your blog. Unfortunately, I have no been lucking finding a lot of info on germinating spruce seeds. Hopefully, I'll run into luck before they come.

I forgot I did grow spruce from seed once. A norway.

I kept em in the fridge from...maybe october to feb?

Sprouted em inside. They did sh...not well in a turface like product from a ball field.

Then kicked it last winter.

I didnt do anything like scarifying them or anything. The took pretty easy.

Good luck.

If you can get "The Reference Manual for Woody Plant Propagation" by Michael Dirr. I picked it up from my local library to check out a few things and it was helpful. It's also recommended by a lot of people on here for propagation purposes (seeds, cuttings, grafting etc.). They would likely have some spruce entries.
