Here's one of an older Boxwood from nursery stock. It has a lot of character and a lot of trunk. I'm curious, never having worked with boxwood before, about their ability to deal with drastic pruning.

Will a boxwood bud on old wood if reduced to no foliage on a branch?

Yes they will. If they are healthy and in a growing spurt.

I have limited experience, but after reading several articles and forum posts, I decided to prune mine back over 2 years.  I left foliage on every branch and just waited for back-budding, then pruned again.

I would agree with this...  I have several in grow pots.  Is a 50 / 50 shot if it back buds if you cut all the leaves off branch.  When I cut two of mine hard backt wo years ago  not leaving leaves on some of the branchs half branches budded back and half died back.   This is just my Expereice.

Boxwood will backbud where all foliage has been removed. It might also bud lower on the  trunk. Depending on the health of the plant, you also might lose the limb you've drastically pruned.

Best approach is to take the drastic pruning in steps--With this lanky plant,this spring I'd chop one of those long leaders off where you want it, wait to see what happens. I'd wait two months to see if the plant pushes new  growth on the remaining stump...
