Engelmann Spruce Issue
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:03 PM »
Hello, this is my one and only engelmann spruce(only spruce actually), collected 2 years ago. The tree was rested for a year and then wired last year, but has grown very well over the 2 years. However, I noticed this evening the shoot tips are wilting/dead! This is affecting about 15-20% of the new spring growth. It rained like heck yesterday, so I was only outside with the trees for 15 minutes or so and did not notice this issue. It is frightening that it virtually happened over night, but the rest of the tree looks perfectly healthy. Looks like a fungal issue to me, any thoughts on what the problem is and the best way to treat it?

For future enthusiasts with the same issue, Jim suggested this is caused by a sudden shock to the plant i.e. moving from shade to sun, hot water from a hose or fertilizer burn.  Turns out the culprit was likely the first application of osmocote.

That looks what I got earlier this mos. on my yew and larch.  It's tip blight, or phomosis and spreads very quickly!  I bought some stuff called Infuse and that seems to be helping so far.   Cooper didn't do too much.  Treat it asap imo.

Hmm, whatever my issue is, it has ceased and has not spread.  I am guessing the plant has just dealt with it.

Seriously, how often do things work themselves out for the better??  Doesnt happen often for me.  I should take pics of the tree now, because it has 2-4 buds swelling where the brown tips fell off.  It is just like I pruned the emerging spring growth.

ANd I'm still battling phymosis!  I've treated them with fungicide multiple times already.  It's very aggravating!  I'm glad yours worked out for the best pwk5017!
