Title: Collected PPines from J. Doyle and W. Pall
Post by: Chrisl on December 15, 2011, 01:22 PM
I attended Jim and Walters weekend workshop 2 weekends ago working on collected material.  The trees we worked on were of very high quality, Jim was a great host, and Walter was a blast.  Very good time had!

I had anticipated buying one collected tree, a RMJ.  But I couldn't afford what I liked in a RMJ, but found two PPine's, collected in spring '10 that had great trunk movement, bark, and almost styled naturally.  Both healthy, but am looking at another year or two before I touch them while waiting for new buds.

Here are the pics.  The first one was too tall to bring back with me so Jim politely offered to bring it with him to the Midwest Aug. Show next year.  The second one is only about 24" tall, and I was able to do some deadwood work to it.  I plan on wiring it later this winter.

Here are some more images. The tall RMJ has indeed a wonderful trunk line.

Thank You Very Much Walter for posting those.  Thanks again for a great weekend, we all had a lot of fun, and learned a ton on new information.  Plus, I feel much more confident carving with tools and power tools now.  And I can't wait till next Aug. when I get the tree from Jim!  This tall one really spoke to me, I truly love it!

And Thanks Steve!  I'm hoping by spring of '13, I'll have a lot of new buds and back buds.  I know what I have to do.

Thanks for sharing! That tall pondy does have a nice trunk.

Nature's Way is a great place to poke around, I've been there twice (though never for a workshop). All kinds of interesting collected material. I have a small Engleman spruce from there, haven't done any work yet...probably another year at least.

Thanks Chris!  Natures Way does have a great selection of collected material.  Post some pics of your Engleman Spruce if you have any, I'd love to see it.

I love these Ponderosa Pines too. But did Walter call the tall one an RMJ when posting his pics?
Not to be nitpicky - just for clarification.   ???
Thanks guys.
Another Jim Doyle fan!

;D I didn't even notice bonsaiTom!  We worked on so many PP's and RMJ's it was easy to get confused.  But you are right, this is not a RMJ, it's a Ponderosa Pine.  Thanks for clarifying that!
