Another Mugo progression.
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:10 PM »
I acquired this Mugo about 1997.   It was rather large and a balled in burlap tree.  It took me all this time to catch a vision for the tree.  Still a couple of session left to go before the tree becomes worthy of showing.  The final picture is far from my plans for the final image.  The tree is going to need a couple of seasons to recover and develop new growth before it's ready for a good bonsai pot.  I would like to put it in one of Sara Raynors masterpieces

It's a large tree. How large of a pot would you need for this tree Vance?

Probably a round or oval about 8" deep and 12" diameter.  I have a pot like that now but my Colorado Blue is in it.  I may have to find a pot for the Spruce and switch them out.

It's going to be beautiful. You just don't find Mugos with that kind of trunk every day. Or ever.
The spruce might be ready for a new pad anyway. Win win.

We shall see Mike.  The Spruce is kind of a special tree in its own right and finding a decent pot for that was difficult too.

Vance, what a stunning Spruce.
If the Spruce's pot meet the sizes you mentioned for the Mugo, that is one big Spruce.....
Sara's pot is a wonderful match for it.

Yes, it is a big tree about four foot tall.  I don't show it too often because it is it is such a project to show prep the tree.  Maybe this next year.  Any way I'm glad you like the tree.  My wife discovered it while we were going through an old Christmas tree farm that was selling the property.  This tree looked like it had been run over by a tractor a time or two and we got the tree for around $20.00.  Of course that was around 1985.

Interesting story....We have friends who own a Christmas tree farm, going down to help them sell trees in a few weeks. Will have to keep my eyes open. But, your tree is 30 years removed from the farm.
Some trees talk to me more than others, your Spruce is special....
Enjoy

Great work. The tree is going to look incredible in that pot.
