1 year progression of yamadori shohin spruce
« on: June 25, 2013, 03:22 PM »
Hello all, I bought this material a little over a year ago from John Kirby, a member here. This is what I have done with the material in the last year.

Pic 1 is the tree as purchased
Pic 2 is after the first styling,
Pic 3 is the following season when the buds were breaking.
Pic 4 is after the growth has extended and foliage cut back.

Continued in next post..
Pic 5 a little over a month later when the growth has matured a bit.

Thanks Chris. I had corresponded with John K recently and he suggested that an update on the tree might be in order. Hence this post. :D

Rob,

I read in Wikipedia that Sitka Spruce is very closely related to Picea Jezoensis. Not sure if Wiki is always accurate so I checked the following.

from conifers.org

Picea Jezoensis:

The type subspecies is native in Japan: S Kuriles and Hokkaido; China: Heilongjiang; North Korea; and Russia: Ussuri, Sakhalin, the Kuriles, and central Kamchatka (Farjon 1990, Iwatsuki et al. 1995). In Japan, it occurs in subalpine forests at 40-1000 m elevation (Iwatsuki et al. 1995); in Russia, it occurs N along Sea of Okhotsk coast to Magadan as "an ecological counterpart of Sitka spruce" (Vladimir Dinets e-mail 1998.01.02). Hardy to Zone 2 (cold hardiness limit between -45.6°C and -40.0°C) (Bannister and Neuner 2001, variety not specified).

Just offering semi-useless information, free and worth every cent.

Best,

Thanks Augustine..Interesting. Also, in regards to any trees that we keep in our collection. No information about them is useless. I don't think you can ever know too much about the trees we take care of. :D
