Collected J. Virginiana
« on: May 03, 2016, 11:34 PM »
I dug this little guy this evening. Thought it had great promise until the soil started to fall from the trunk once I got it home. It was dug from a wooded area that is frequently mowed by brush hog. The lower trunk is hideous but I think I can remedy that over the years by gradually pulling the branch down at the major scar.

Nice find. My only suggestion is to leave it alone this year and let the foliage grow vigorously. Hose it down frequently to keep mites at bay and don't place in the vicinity of crab apples. (Crabs + eastern red cedar can = cedar apple rust.)
