Title: Blaauw Shimpaku (Blue Shimpaku)
Post by: Yenling83 on September 28, 2010, 10:40 PM
I was potentially thinking of trying to graft Blaauw Shimpaku juniper onto a collected Sierra Juniper.  Was curious if anyone has seen this before or has pictures?  Seems kind of fitting that they are both blue/green.

Anyone know where I could purchase small Blaauw whips?

Darn it!  Great suggestion John, too bad the only state they do not ship too is CA.  That would have been perfect-good prices too.

Brent is only carrying 1 gallon size, which I guess could work.  But I will keep looking first.

So grafting either blue Sargents or blue shimpaku doesn't sound too wacky?  Reason I ask is because I feel like I never see it.  Thanks for your replys!

Well, what are you trying for?  Smaller, tighter foliage?  Do you have a particular Sierra in mind?  Is it smaller?

Here's the juniper I am thinking of grafting on.  I will repot this Nov, wait a season then probably have Boon help me graft.

Evergreen also sells Juniperus chinensis 'Fudo Shimpaku'.

A bluer form with a stronger tendency to form more needle-like (juvenile)foliage in youth and after heavy pruning. It is closer to 'Blaauw' than 'Shimpaku'.

Unfortunately for you its offered only in 1Gal size right now.  Maybe you could find it elsewhere as whips.

Have you asked Boon to check w/ his sources?
