Title: Big California Juniper
Post by: John Kirby on February 17, 2015, 08:30 PM
This is a 40" or so California Juniper that I have out at Boon's in California. It is about 40-42"tall. It was acquired from Mas Ishii for the 2005 Visit by Shinji Suzuki and Isao Omachi. The tree was styled and then raffled. It became weak and found its way through Johnny Uchida to Boon. It was restyled ladt year by Daisaku Nomoto and placed in to a hexagonal chinese pot. Repotted it this weekend in to this Japanese pot and willberestyyled over the next few months for submission for consideration for the Artisans cup. More to follow.

That's a big beauty.  Great trunk.  A lot of presence.

I am interested to see it restyled and in its prepped state.  Its going to be gorgeous.  I'm also interested to see how they handle those poodle tail drop branches

Beautiful tree, and I love that lighting. Have seen many pics from the show on facebook and the trees all look very dramatic. Good stuff.

Owen, the one major thing I would change is the bath tub it is planted in. It is a very large production Tokoname pot. I was fooled by the first repotting out of the nursery container. There was hard wood about 6-7" below the surface, we thought it was the trunk stub, being cautious because it came out of poor planting media with few roots. After a couple of years in good soil, the old pit was full of roots, so we went back to shorten the stub. Got working on it, pop a piece if plywood from the collecting box came off and there was 4-5 inches of organic potting mix there. The tree can go into an appropriately sized pot for the next repotting. I an looking at an antique or a contempoary Gyouzan pot, but it needd to be light than the current pot, bulk wise not color.

Dorian, the tree was taken up to the show and back by two of my BIB friends and compatriots who also had displays in the Show, Jonas (bonsaitonight.com) and Eric (phutu.com) two of the very best websites/blogs related to bonsai around, and they don't want to sell you anything!

This was certainly a favorite of mine! I really like the touch with the exposed roots on the left side, like the tree had been stuck by strong winds over the years. Not to mention the rest of the tree lol!!!

I was quite amazed at the size of most of the trees there. I had imagined most about half the size they actually were.

Nicer pot, better scale.
