Hi John.

Just out of interest, why into a different pot?

I was fooled by the first repotting out of the nursery container. There was hard wood about 6-7" below the surface, we thought it was the trunk stub, being cautious because it came out of poor planting media with few roots. After a couple of years in good soil, the old pit was full of roots, so we went back to shorten the stub. Got working on it, pop a piece if plywood from the collecting box came off and there was 4-5 inches of organic potting mix there. The tree can go into an appropriately sized pot for the next repotting. I an looking at an antique or a contempoary Gyouzan pot, but it needd to be light than the current pot, bulk wise not color.

Well there you go.

It will teach me to try and remember what I read.

John Kirby:
Nicer pot, better scale.
