Gafuten 2013
« on: February 05, 2013, 07:50 PM »
I'm "borrowing" from Al's blog (http://bonsaial.wordpress.com) where he recently posted/linked to a video of Jonas Sandell on Youtube.  This is an excellent resource for all of us who aren't able to make it ...and he leaves us with the morsel that he's planning to be back for Kokufu-ten so ...watch this space.

This young man did a very good job shooting this for his first video. I enjoyed it very much.

Don, you're very right.  I got a new TV recently (basically joining this millenia, ...literally) and it streams Youtube videos.  It truly felt like I was there being able to see the trees so large and clearly.

The trees in this show are awesome.  There ARE some headscratchers along with some trees that I didn't care for, but they were few and far between.  Those first few shohin displays!!!!  (And the pines on the top of each!)

Does anyone know what the entry requirements are for Gafu-ten?  Professionals?  Private?

Also, and this may be the camera, but I was very impressed with the lighting for this display.  There were no harsh shadows below OR behind the trees.  I'll have to watch again to determine how they did it (I think there were some pullback shots looking down the "aisle").

I'm a little jealous of your new TV, I had to watch on my computer. When I get the extra money someday in a  land far far away I want one of those new 80 inchers. It would be so much better watching on a big  screen.

Trust me, I got a good deal or I'd still have my circa 1998 27" tv w/ digital converter box.  You're welcome anytime you're in the neighborhood.

Guys,

What is the species of the tree with the salmon/pink berry clusters that appear around 3:36?

Thank you.

Best,

Gafu-ten is sponsored by the All Japan Shohin-Bonsai Association.  Not sure what the requirements for entry are.
