This JBP had a little fern starting to poke out from it's trunk, too.

Ryan Neil conducted a morning workshop and an afternoon critique.  He explained that he also helped the participating clubs setup and rearrange the display for best effect.

Larry,

It's no problem with GIMP for Windows and David's Batch Processor (thanks for the suggestion, Wayne).

There were some really good trees presented there.  Were there any awards given?  Do you recall what Ryan had to say about the display or any of the trees?

Do you know if this is a club display or several clubs coming together?

Thanks for the pics.

There was a place for the public to vote, and I saw some ribbons on a back table waiting to be given out, but I imagine that was done on Sunday.  Unfortunately I was down for just the day on Saturday.

Ryan started the critique by explaining that he was scheduled to be in a day early to help setup, but with some confusion and scheduling conflicts he didn't get in until 2am Saturday morning.  He was to help setup and explain how best to maximize the show layout.  The display had already been setup (except for a few late arrivals) but was rearranged early Saturday morning, before it opened to the public.  During the critique he briefly explained items that were taken into consideration:

  • Trees on the end should flow (sometimes dramatically) towards the center
  • Height of the trees were varied
  • Species were varied
  • Trees at entry (just inside the door) should be especially nice

He continued with more items, some admittedly nit-picking:

  • Nice backdrops
  • Tables neatly dressed
  • Plenty of space for the trees
  • Plenty of space for aisles and visitors
  • Display not tucked away or hidden in a corner
  • Lighting could (always) be better

I'm sure there were more points I may have missed.

This is a regional show with a number of clubs on display.  I would be surprised if any club or individual interested in displaying would be turned away based on geography.  I saw trees from Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis/Mississippi, Louisville, and Florida.  I'm sure there were more that I didn't recognize and/or missed in conversation.

I forgot my good camera at home and had to steal someone's point and shoot, so some of the pictures didn't turn out.  I'll blame the camera.  :)

No John, you did an excellent job with the photos!  And Thanks also for posting them.  I love to see what the rest of the country is doing/producing.

You might want to check out the 34th Annual Mid-America Bonsai Exhibit (and take plenty of pictures to share).

I've been meaning to get up there for several years, but it seems every year I've got a scheduling conflict.
