How much does size matter ;)? Kokufu question
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:52 AM »
First off, I have never been to the Kokufu show and only own 3 Kokufu show books.  I'm wondering how much size of the tree matters in selecting the best Bonsai in the world?  From my limited experience viewing the show books it looks like smaller trees don't seem to win very often or at all.

Few questions i'm wondering about:
1. Do smaller trees ever win at the Kokufu show? If so, what type of height are we talking about? Do you know the smallest tree that has every won?

2. Take any small tree and place it into a magical enlargement machine, everything about the tree stays the same except it's bigger.  Is the tree more likely to win the Kokufu as a big tree?

Thanks!

There are some small to medium sized winners, every now and then you will find them in a Kokufu Album or in one of the Pot and tree books. But the vast majority seem to be pretty good sized, aka Big Gulps.

It is pretty hard to get the level of absolute complexity and refinement on small trees, but some folks  do it.

There was a shohin bonsai display that won at the 80th exhibit.  I believe that was the first time.

Big trees tend to dominate, but there are a number of factors that influence who wins; one very important factor is who the owner is.  The bonsai have to be excellent and have a history too.  The show itself has evolved.  When Kato-san was at the helm, sometimes a prize was not given.  It's sti'll the best show in the world.  Economic factors have come into play.  I picked a book at random and a chuhin jasmine and black pine  won the prize in Kokufu 77 and 78 respectively.  IMO, Kokufu trees need a certain level of power to get accepted.  The whole show flows well for many reasons.  There is an understanding that great pots and stands should be used.  This helps a lot.
