Title: Collecting in New Mexico
Post by: Buffrider on August 13, 2011, 06:53 PM
Some friends from a bonsai group want to make a trip to new Mexico to collect some ponderosas and some junipers. We are wondering the best time for this there. Some of us have heard October and of course the usual early spring. Is anyone familiar whith this?

My opinion is early spring or fall is the best.  If there is snow, right after it melts is best or After it rains makes it a plus.  If tree's arn't healthy you can always do some prep-add some organic fertilizer, water possibly add more dirt/duff if needed and come back a season or several seasons later to remove the tree.  Make sure you can collect lot's of roots, that's key.
