I picked this up at the missouri botanical gardens this weekend. It would make a great accent plant it the leaves were smaller. The flowers are the size of an m&m. Has anybody ever used something like this before?

Theoretically, any plant can be used as an accent plant, providing that it fills the following conditions:

 - It is in scale with the main object, which is the bonsai tree.
 - It is displayed within a particular context, usually to represent the season, time of the day, but it also can be a thematic   element within a story that the display is communicating to the audience.
 - It is compatible with the bonsai tree (following ecological, botannical, and other criteria  - such as tradition, etc)

In the case of this orchid, it is important that it is not too large, compared to the tree.  The context could be achievable - spring or summer, the seasons of blooming flowers. The compatibility could be problematic, you cannot display a temperate pine tree, or a maple with this orchid, since they are from different worlds. Also, it should not compete with the tree, with its flashy colors.

I can imagine being used with a large tropical tree - a species coming from a place where orchids are common.
